FBI Analyzes Suspect's Possible Tattoo as Search for Missing Arizona Mother Reaches Day 40

Investigators examine forensic evidence and release images of male suspect seen on victim's Nest camera in Catalina Foothills.

An 84-year-old mother remains missing in Catalina Foothills, Arizona, as the search reaches day 40, with FBI investigators continuing to analyze forensic evidence and examine a possible tattoo on a male suspect captured on the victim's home camera.

Background

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 when family members dropped her off at her Catalina Foothills home after dinner, according to authorities. Her disappearance was reported the following morning when she failed to show up for church. The FBI subsequently obtained footage from Guthrie's Nest camera, which captured images of a male suspect.

The investigation has drawn national attention, with over $1 million in reward money being offered for information leading to Guthrie's recovery. The rewards include $102,500 from 88-CRIME, $100,000 from the FBI, and $1 million from the Guthrie family. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the 1-800-CALL-FBI line or by calling the Pima County Sheriff's Department tip line at 520-351-4900.

The Investigation

FBI agents are working to determine whether a male suspect seen January 31 on Guthrie's Nest camera has a tattoo on his right wrist, FOX News Digital reports. The suspect appears in footage obtained from the victim's home security camera.

Investigators consulted with Darren "The Dude" Rosa, a tattoo artist at Rising Dragon Tattoos in New York with 30 years of experience, to analyze the possible tattoo. Rosa described the visible marking as a black and grey design.

"Black and grey work is a very prevalent style, not only in the southwestern area...but let's say the southwestern area, among gangs, Mexican people who might be in these gangs, or cartels, [who] like to get black and grey," Rosa told "Crime Stories" host Nancy Grace. "If we're talking about a tattoo that was done in a penitentiary, these inmates don't have access to colored ink."

Rosa noted the suspect could be heavily tattooed, possibly with a full sleeve, and might have neck tattoos. "This is a style that's been embellishing gangs for years, and they've honed this style, this very subtle gradation of ink, to a fine art. And this is even considered a hallmark of those who have moved up in the echelons," he said.

The FBI has released images and videos of the suspect, which appear to show two separate visits to Guthrie's home. Homeowners in the area are encouraged to submit relevant security footage through the Pima County Sheriff's Department Evidence Submission Portal.
