The 25-year-old from North Vancouver, British Columbia, was sentenced last Thursday to two consecutive life sentences for the November 2024 attack that left his victims with critical injuries, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. "Our victim's boyfriend opened the door and Vanderhoef forced his way in and began stabbing the boyfriend with a knife resulting in multiple critical injuries," the sheriff's office said. The woman grabbed a sharp metal object and attempted to defend her boyfriend during the struggle.
During the attack, Vanderhoef strangled the woman and stabbed her as well, causing moderate injuries. All three individuals sustained wounds—Vanderhoef suffered multiple critical stab wounds during the violent confrontation before authorities arrived.

The Investigation
All three individuals were transported to a local hospital after authorities responded to the scene. Whyte was found near the location and initially claimed he had no knowledge of what was occurring.
"The investigation determined that Whyte was an accomplice of Vanderhoef during this incident and that he had knowledge of what Vanderhoef's intentions were," the sheriff's office said. "Whyte was arrested Monday, November 26th, as he sat on a flight at San Jose Mineta International Airport preparing to return to Canada."
Prosecutors later revealed that Vanderhoef confessed to planning the attack for approximately one month before flying to California. His stated objective was chilling: authorities said he planned to "actually kill someone."
Convictions and Sentencing
Both defendants were convicted of crimes related to the attack in February. A jury found Vanderhoef guilty of two counts of willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder and one count of residential burglary.
"The jury also found true that Vanderhoef personally inflicted great bodily injury and personally used a weapon during the commission of the crimes," according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.
Whyte pleaded guilty to assault by means of force likely to cause great bodily injury and being an accessory after the fact to a felony. He was sentenced in April and testified against Vanderhoef during his trial.
