Ottawa County Sheriff Eric DeBoer announced during a Monday news conference that deputies initially responded to the family's home Friday morning after reports of a smoky odor in the area but found nothing unusual. Roughly three hours later, additional calls brought them back to the residence, where they discovered smoke and located seven victims along with Karolkiewicz inside.
"This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand," Sheriff DeBoer said in a statement. "Our hearts remain with the family, friends, classmates, neighbors and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss."
Investigators determined Karolkiewicz shot his family, then intentionally set multiple fires before turning the gun on himself. Some of the bodies were located in bedrooms. The family's dogs and at least one cat also died in the fire.
Authorities said they are not searching for any additional suspects. Detectives continue working to determine what occurred in the hours leading up to the killings and have not released a motive or the names of the six children.
