Hugo, Minnesota — Authorities say a 68-year-old woman who warned authorities years earlier that her son wished she would die was killed at her rural home last September, and now that son faces murder charges as his trial gets underway.
Charlene Wunderlich was found badly beaten inside her Ingersoll Avenue residence on Sept. 16, 2024, with her 47-year-old son, Trevor Wunderlich, seated next to her, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded after someone called 911 and dispatchers heard noises consistent with an ongoing assault or struggle through the open line. When officers arrived at the home located approximately 25 miles northeast of Minneapolis, they found Charlene Wunderlich lying on the floor in obvious distress.
According to a statement of probable cause reviewed by Law&Crime, Trevor Wunderlich was seated in a chair beside his mother when authorities entered. Officers attempted to detain him, but he fled into the basement and out the back door.
"She was conscious for a short period of time and was able to tell officers that it was the defendant who had assaulted her," the court document states. Charlene Wunderlich quickly lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Authorities determined her cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries, including multiple rib fractures, a sternal fracture, chest wall hemorrhage and pulmonary contusions. The manner of death was ruled homicide.
Investigators later learned that approximately four years before the killing, Charlene Wunderlich had filed for an order of protection against her son, writing in the application that "he wishes I would die" and noting the behavior had been occurring for three years and was escalating.
Court records reviewed by KSTP showed Trevor Wunderlich was repeatedly arrested and booked into jail. In 2021, a witness reported he gave his mother a black eye and was "out of control." After that incident, Charlene allegedly stated she "didn't care if she lived or died anymore."
The Charges
Trevor Wunderlich is charged with first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree murder. He was apprehended the morning after the killing when a neighbor found him hiding in a camper on her property. Although he fled from that location, officers located him nearby and took him into custody.
During opening statements at trial this week, Assistant Washington County Attorney Richard Podvin told jurors that Charlene Wunderlich had life insurance policies with the defendant listed as beneficiary. "With Charlene out of the way, the defendant stood to gain from property rights and money, a windfall of over $1 million," Podvin said, according to the Pioneer Press.
The prosecutor described how the victim's back was beaten so severely that her ribcage could not expand properly, causing her to essentially suffocate on her kitchen floor. The defense has not yet presented its case.
